City to launch activity-filled 22nd reading month

Shenzhen will launch its 22nd reading month Monday, with more than 1,400 reading and cultural activities lined up, focusing on fields such as science popularization, ecological museums, geographical discovery, interstellar exploration, future creation, and science fiction and imagination.

This year’s Shenzhen Reading Month, themed “Inspiring a New Vision,” will continue to create a reading extravaganza for all citizens and, for the first time, set up subvenues across the city, the event’s organizers said at a press conference at the Civic Center in Futian District on Thursday.

The third Shenzhen Book Fair will also be held simultaneously during the reading month, according to the organizers.

The reading month will encompass activities under three key sections, namely “Culture Awakening,” “Idea Xchange” and “Readers Carnival.”

“Culture Awakening” will aim to disseminate cultural ideas by holding the reading event’s signature projects such as reading forums, while “Idea Xchange” will build a cultural platform for reading, dialogues and brainstorming by holding activities such as “When the City of Design Meets the City of Literature.”

Under the theme “When the City of Design Meets the City of Literature,” the organizers will also host a series of activities, which include inviting designers from Shenzhen, the UNESCO City of Design, to have dialogues with writers from Nanjing, the UNESCO City of Literature, as well as setting up exhibitions highlighting the two cities’ interactions.

“Readers Carnival” will feature selections for the 10 best books and 10 best children’s books, science fiction week, and other activities to create a reading feast to meet various reader groups’ demands and facilitate everyone’s participation.

Likewise, a legion of well-known writers and scholars will be invited to Shenzhen during the reading month to jointly stage a “knowledge carnival.”

Famous writers and scholars will be invited to carry out four thematic dialogues, while some big-name guests will conduct a high-end dialogue on reading and urban innovation.

First launched in 2000, Shenzhen Reading Month has been held every November. Reading has become part of many city residents’ everyday life, thanks to government promotion and the citizens’ thirst for knowledge.

UNESCO has named Shenzhen as a global model for the promotion of reading. As of April 2020, the city had been home to seven over-10,000-square-meter book malls, 673 public libraries and more than 700 brick-and-mortar bookstores.
